Kelly Berger

"My car is my most treasured possession," Kelly Berger says, her voice filled with enthusiasm. "It took so long to get that vehicle and to be able to drive. The independence and freedom I get from driving is unmatched." For Kelly, this car represents more than just a mode of transportation - it's a symbol of her hard-won independence and her determination to live life on her own terms.

Early Life

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Kelly spent most of her childhood in Louisville, Kentucky before returning to Cincinnati. At a young age, she was diagnosed with a type of muscular dystrophy. It wasn’t until her later years in life, that she was genetically confirmed with collagen VI congenital muscular dystrophy, a condition that affects her muscles and joints, making mobility challenging.

Although she endures physical limitations imposed by her condition, Kelly's childhood was filled with adventure and outdoor exploration. "We were outside a lot, just exploring," she recalls fondly. "We were adventure people. We lived in a neighborhood with woods, so we were always out there."

Kelly's parents played a crucial role in shaping her outlook on life. They emphasized the importance of kindness and empathy, especially in the face of adversity. Growing up with a disability, Kelly often encountered insensitive comments from strangers. Her parents taught her to develop resilience and not take such remarks to heart.

Threads of Wisdom

Kelly's journey has been marked by determination and a unique perspective on life. Her experiences have led her to appreciate the small acts of kindness that many might overlook. "I'm really impressed by just the kindness of others and strangers," she says. "People opening doors, people picking up things that I drop. It seems really small, but it means a lot.”

Kelly's experiences have also shaped her career path. She's dedicated herself to advocating for and mentoring others with disabilities, ensuring they have the resources and support needed for their own journeys. This passion stems from her own challenges in pursuing higher education. "It just took a lot more to be able to go away to school and balance academic life and everything. But I was able to do it and live independently with the help of others," she explains.

When asked about her superpower, Kelly doesn't hesitate: "I'm pretty good with words. I like to write, so words are kind of my jam." This ability to express herself has undoubtedly aided her in her advocacy work.

Reflections

Looking back on her life, Kelly expresses a wish that she had spent more time with her loved ones before they passed away. This reflection has reinforced her belief in the importance of cherishing time with those most important to her.

As for the future, Kelly remains optimistic. She sees hope in the younger generation's energy and their desire to effect positive change. Her own contributions to this change are evident in her work advocating for those with disabilities.

Kelly's story is a testament to the power of perspective and resilience. Through challenges and triumphs, she has learned to appreciate life's moments, big and small. Her parting wisdom encapsulates this beautifully: "Things really do fly by and you really need to reign in those special moments. Try to enjoy it and not rush through life."

In a world that often moves too fast, Kelly reminds us to slow down, show kindness, and find joy in the little things. Her story is not just about overcoming physical limitations, but about embracing life in all its facets, with grace, resilience, and an unwavering appreciation for the present moment.
